Common Running Injuries

If you are a runner then, one can experience many running injuries like Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, or sesamoiditis, just to name a few. Even with the best preparations some of these injuries, pains, and aches are inevitable. One of the most common pains that are related to running or jogging is called runners knee, which is caused by excessive pronation of the foot. Pronation meaning rolling in and down of the foot. To relieve this pain proper shoe inserts will heal the pain.

Another painful injury is shin splints, which occurs mainly at the front of the foot and inside the leg. It is caused by running on hard surfaces, over striding, muscle imbalance, or overuse. To treat this painful injury, you need to change running techniques or insertion of proper orthotics in the shoes.

Arch pain is the most caused pain by many people. It is known as plantar fasciitis and frequently caused by stress on the plantar (bottom) part of the feet. The pain is caused by the supportive fibrous tissue that runs from heel to ball of the feet becomes injured. Also, some other causes are forefoot or rearfoot instability due to excessive pronation and overtraining for exercise or major sporting events. Treatments for this injury are special running shoes from the podiatrist office as well as checking the activity of your feet by the podiatrist as well.

Another type of injury is called sesamoiditis, which are ball bearings of the foot. The sesamoids are group of accessory bones that are located under the first metarsal bone. Extreme harm can take place at the site of these bones during aerobics and inflammation and fractures are likely to occur. Many of the injuries are treated with custom orthotics and proper shoes. This is a huge advantage because no patient has to worry about any invasive methods.

Achilles Tendonitis is a major injury that affects many athletes. One popular iconic basketball player named Shaquel O’Neal suffered from this injury, where he had to discontinue playing basketball.  Therefore, I know you runners and other athletes do not want to be affected with this injury and be forced to stop all your activities.  Take care of your feet today! Achilles tendonitis is frequently caused by rising on your toes like a ballet dancer or performing aerobics.  This will create pain and tightness in the large muscles at the back of the leg and leads to an inflamed Achilles Tendon. The best treatment to prevent this condition from occurring is to stretch the calf muscle gently and gradually before and after the workout in an orderly fashion.  Remember to never stretch a cold muscle, so make sure you warm up properly prior to stretching.  Click here for a video on stretching.
